This blog is being developed as a facility to enable me to effectively share information, and make beneficial connections, between people working in various community networks in Manchester, concerned with local food, and related issues.

Food Prices: How High Can they Go?

Report back by Rob Squires on the Labour Party Conference fringe event at the Climate Clinic, Sun Sept 21st, 2008.

Two years ago, at the 2006 Climate Clinic I put the question to Alan Simpson MP (Nottingham), “What kind of government intervention can we expect, in order to support local food?” to which he replied that there was nothing in the pipeline what-so-ever. Two years later on, the situation does not seem to have changed significantly, although during this time the issues of the meet, dairy and fishing industries, on the environment, global food security, and health, have shot up the political agenda, from obscurity, to a point where their devastating effects are now acknowledged and beginning to be discussed in public.

Grow, Cook, Eat, at Glebelands Market Garden

A short video clip from when East Salford project Grow Cook Eat visited Glebelands market garden in Sale, to pick up tips for their 'urban guerilla' gardening plans to transform the alleyways of Salford. According to the Soil Association, Glebelands is the UK's only peri-urban (on the edge of the city) organic market garden, which is a very worrying statistic. The video features Lesley Bryson, who co-ordinates Glebelands, and Kevin Coakley from St. Sebastians Community Centre in Salford.

The Power of Community - Living Well in a Low Energy World

Cuban visionary Roberto Perez will be doing a public talk in Manchester on September 24th, about how Cuba made their rapid transition to a low energy, sustainable society. During what became known as their 'Special Period', the people of Cuba transformed their urban neighbourhoods into green, food producing environments. With oil supplies peaking, UK citizens are being forced to pay increasingly higher food and energy bills. As part of his UK tour, Perez will be sharing his experiences with Manchester people, about how communities can work together, to be more self-reliant, and develop solutions to global food insecurity by growing our own food around the City.

Council threatens to turf over Leaf Street Community Garden (again ..)

"I'm president of the US and I ain't gonna eat no more brocolli"

Leafy Street garden in Hulme is once again under threat - local residents have not been sticking to our agreements, and the council is threatening to turf over this amazing community asset, because it is a bit messy. A guy in a suit from our new social landlord, South City walked round the garden and proclaimed, "It can't stay like this!" The question I am asking is what our new social landlords are going to do, to help preserve and improve this immense social asset, on their manor??

Forest gardening techniques on Leaf Street

Read this article to view photographs of comfrey planted as a living mulch around the base of eight year old fruit trees, in the forest garden area of Leaf Street community garden. The comfrey is successfully out-competing ground elder, and goose grass, as well as providing multiple other benefits as a mulch.
